Kristin DeHaven, MD, is a board-certified gynecologist who has dedicated her life to women’s health and medicine.
Dr. DeHaven knew from an early age that she wanted to be a physician. She clearly recalls the first time she visited the hospital where her father worked as an inpatient pharmacist. “The hospital was small, and we entered through the Emergency Department. I saw the busy nurses and doctors caring for their patients, and they seemed so serious. Even though I was young, I recognized the importance of their work, and I realized that I wanted to help others through medicine.”
She completed her Bachelor of Science at Wake Forest University and directly entered medical school at West Virginia University. She completed her residency training at the University of Louisville and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
Dr. DeHaven has also traveled abroad for medical missions to Nicaragua and has traveled to Haiti five times to perform gynecologic surgery in that challenging environment. “I feel truly blessed to have partnered with the Community Coalition for Haiti. They provide a wonderful facility for the underserved women of Haiti. Because these women haven’t had any access to medical care, they have come with the most significant gynecologic problems I have ever seen. Performing these difficult surgeries has enhanced my surgical skills, benefiting my home patients.”
Currently, she works to improve the health of women in her community and is a board member for Bethania Kids, a ministry in India. This organization focuses on empowering women and lifting up orphaned children and people with disabilities. In February 2020, she led a women’s health symposium in the town of Kodaikanal, which is located in southern India.
Dr. D and her husband are enjoying their empty nest as both of their children are in college. They love obstacle course events and can be found at the gym most Friday evenings. Dr. D’s strong faith has guided her through good and bad times. She firmly believes that her mission is to help her patients be the healthiest they can be.
"My job is to empower women with knowledge. I spend a lot of time educating women about the how and why of their conditions. Through education, we can reduce risky behaviors, critically assess our personal role in taking control of our health, and make positive steps towards a long, healthy life."
